Each of the sports massage techniques we use has a somewhat different goal in mind. We always aim to affect tissues – extend the muscle, increase the range of motion of the joint, etc. – and we use not only our fingertips, but also our knuckles, soft fists, forearms, and elbows to apply and disperse varying amounts of force in different directions. An experienced therapist exerts varying pressures through the tissues in a well-executed session, attempting to trigger physiological reactions in different depths of tissues within the musculoskeletal system.
